Boorani Moorthy
After working for a few years in the construction industry for a leading residential development firm in her home of India, Boorani made the decision to return study and pursue a Master of Engineering Studies in Construction Management. She plans to work as a Quantity Surveyor or in contract management.

“I was drawn to the University of Auckland for its strong reputation in research and its welcoming atmosphere for international students. I also liked that Auckland is such a diverse city, so I knew I’d meet people from all over the world.”
Boorani worked for a few years after earning a Bachelor of Civil Engineering. She was motivated to return to study to “improve my technical skills, learn more about modern construction methods and project management. Doing my Master’s degree has helped me build on what I learned from working and get ready for leadership roles in the future.”
“I really value the practical focus of my course. The mix of lectures, group work, and real-world case studies helps me apply theory to actual construction challenges. The lectures and learning materials are easily accessible, and the course content is relevant to the industry, which are very useful for my career.
“I plan to work in either a Quantity Surveyor role or Contract management after graduation. My degree is giving me a strong foundation and practical experience in New Zealand, which I believe will open doors to good job opportunities.”
Be open-minded and ready to embrace new experiences.
“When I first started at here as an international student, I felt lonely, but attending campus events really helped me feel more connected. The international student support team is amazing, helping me with practical issues and made me feel cared for. Access to healthcare through the University Health & Counselling Service was also a huge support during a tough time and made a big difference.”
She is enjoying life in here in Auckland. “I love how close you are to nature here. There are beaches, parks, and hiking trails just a short trip away. You can easily enjoy great food, cultural events, and beaches. The friendly and relaxed vibe here makes it a great place to live.”
Boorani advises fellow students to get involved in campus life and make the most of the city. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help, everyone is so supportive. Get involved in clubs and activities, it's a great way to make friends and settle in. Make the most of living in such a beautiful, multicultural city.”
O-Week is a amazing! It’s packed with fun events, from icebreaker activities to the Alfred Street Party in the first week of Semester One.
“If you join a student club, they may have events that takes you to different parts of Auckland. I am a member of the University of Auckland Surf Society, where I enjoy connecting with others through surfing and beach activities.
“I am a volunteer at AUSA (Auckland University Students' Association), working with international students. I am also a postgraduate buddy to support students to settle in. These roles have helped me build great friendships and feel more connected on campus.”
“As a professional watercolour artist, attending the Paint and Sip event helped me improve and connected me with fellow artists in the University. It encouraged me to sell my paintings at Market Day, which is held each semester at the Student Quad. Making sales boosted my confidence and spurred on my entrepreneurial spirit.”
