Dilani Goonetilleke
An experienced developmental social worker from Sri Lanka, Dilani is enrolled in the Master of Social and Community Leadership to upskill and take the next step in her career. She took part in the Workplace Insights Programme (WIP) run by CDES, the University’s Career Development and Employability Services.

Dilani took the opportunity on a family holiday to visit the University and spoke to a CDES staff member who highlighted the Master of Social and Community Leadership programme. “I had been exploring courses related to social work in other institutions and countries, but this one stood out, being practically grounded.”
“The course content is what motivates me as I explore how subjects such as leadership, social innovation and social change interacts with New Zealand society.”
Learning from practitioners in the field and engaging with lecturers who encourage diverse viewpoints has been a great experience.
She engaged with CDES again once semester started. “Their CV check and interview guidance gave me confidence to secure a part time job within a short time.
“The Workplace Insights Programme has been an enriching and interactive learning experience. The most useful aspects have been learning about kiwi work culture, networking, and the “chill” vibe.
“My degree has given me new skills while learnings from CDES and WIP have supported me to understand and appreciate kiwi work culture. The learning has given me confidence and motivation to tread a new path New Zealand".
Be willing to try out new things, it’s part of learning!
“The University of Auckland is an inclusive and enriching place to study where you learn to move out of your comfort zone and explore new adventures. Learning is as much about life as it is about academics!
“I joined Auckland University trekking club which organises regular treks for both experienced and new trekkers. It’s a good way to explore the great outdoors!
Dilani is also enjoying staying at university accommodation. “It’s a super experience to get to know different cultures and still have your own space! The environment is very study friendly, and there are regular events run by the accommodation team which has great food and engagement opportunities.”
