“I first visited the University of Auckland in 2022, when I participated in the New Zealand Brain Bee challenge, an event for high school students to learn about the brain. The stunning lecture halls and passionate lecturers I met there sparked my interest to study here.

“I have always enjoyed science and with the Bachelor of Science, I can find out what science really is, as it goes into more depth than in high school. I particularly enjoy hearing about the various research projects my lecturers have conducted or are conducting as it helps to grow my passion and love for science.

“I am hoping to study the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery so that I can work in the medical field. I would also like to do a research year, when I can research topics in biology that intrigues me.”

It was a huge relief to be awarded the University of Auckland International School Leaver scholarship as it took a huge financial burden off my family’s shoulders.

Jiwon found this scholarship through the university's website. “When I was preparing for my scholarship application, my school’s career department teachers helped me to polish what I wrote. They are there to support you in applying for university.”

She has some sound advice for those thinking of making the move here. “Make the most of your time here in the University of Auckland by participating in various activities, clubs and events. Although it is important to stay on top of all your work, it is just as crucial to explore this country and Auckland in general, so that you can grow to love this beautiful city.”

She emphasises there are support services available, when you need them. “Please don’t hesitate to seek help if you ever need it. University of Auckland provides a very supportive environment for all students. However, it is important that you take the initiative yourself to seek help if you need it.”
