Sopanhala Chea
Originally from Cambodia, first-year student Sopanhala worked hard at Iona College in Havelock North, and was awarded a University of Auckland International School Leaver Scholarship. She is studying towards a Bachelor of Science majoring in Biomedical Science with the goal of pursuing Medicine.
Winning the scholarship not only offered financial relief, it also “allowed me to place more focus on my academic goals. It encouraged me to be more disciplined and committed.”

Sopanhala did her own research into scholarships through the University website. “I filtered through categories for international students as well as the pathway that I want to pursue.
“My tip is to be honest and authentic about your experiences, don’t hesitate to list your achievements, big or small, as it shows that you value the effort that you have invested. Moreover, don’t be afraid to talk about your strengths as it shows your confidence and your purpose to make a meaningful impact. Most importantly, share about your goals as a student and beyond.”
I get to learn from many professors who are experts in their fields.
“I really enjoy my time in the labs to gain hands-on experience with the different equipment and applying my understanding of the scientific concepts. It’s been so interesting to learn about the physiological aspect of biology and the mechanisms behind chemical reactions.”
“Auckland is a city with a relatively laid-back atmosphere, yet it is bustling with diverse cultures, with people from all walks of life. The city is very accessible, getting to and from places is usually a 10–20-minute walk from the City Campus to nearby cafes, the art gallery, central business district, the Rec centre and other local spots.”
I wholeheartedly encourage those who are thinking about moving here to
study to just do it because Auckland is a city that has something for everyone.
“The University provides students with excellent facilities, experienced professors and a wide range of support. There are lots of different clubs that students can join to be a part of the diverse and dynamic student community, feel the vibrancy of the city life as well as enjoy the green spaces and the nature around.
“I love that everything is so accessible at the City Campus, they are only a few minute’s walk from each other. There are lots of cafes around, new pop-ups in front of the Kate Edgar Information Commons. There are various student-organised events that bring students together to socialise and share their interests!”
