Doctoral scholarships for international students

University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship

In 2025, the Scholarship provides a tax-free stipend of up to $34,569 pa, with an annual CPI adjustment to the stipend value, for up to 36 months of full-time study, plus tuition fees for international students who are eligible to study under the domestic fees policy, and the single student Health Insurance compulsory charge.

Students will be considered for a University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship at the time of application for a place in their doctoral programme.

Any student who is to be offered a place in a doctoral programme will be eligible for scholarship consideration prior to receiving their offer of place.

Each faculty/Large Scale Research Institute (LSRI)/University Research Centre (URC) will advertise their scholarship opportunities on their websites and when you apply for admission into your doctoral programme, you’ll indicate if you wish to be considered for one of those University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship opportunities.

Scholarships will be awarded in four scholarship/admission rounds each year. To be considered for a scholarship you’ll need to apply for the programme by either 1 November, 1 March, 1 June, or 1 September.

A Bursary to assist students in the Semilleros de Talento programme undertaking doctoral study at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland.

Faculty specific scholarships

Arts and Education

Faculty of Arts Doctoral Scholarship

Students will be considered for a Faculty of Arts Doctoral Scholarship at the time of application for a place in their doctoral programme.

Scholarships will be awarded in four scholarship/admission rounds each year. To be considered for a scholarship you’ll need to apply for the programme by either 1 November, 1 March, 1 June, or 1 September, and indicate you wish to be considered for a University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship.

The Scholarship will cover compulsory fees for international students who are eligible to study under the domestic fees policy, including the single student Health Insurance compulsory charge.

Fred and Helen Hanan Endowed Scholarship in Chinese Studies

Up to $40,000 in scholarships to support international or domestic
postgraduate students majoring in Chinese Studies who are in financial
need.

Graeme Edwards Award in Music

An Award of up to $8,000 to support international and domestic undergraduate and postgraduate music students undertaking study in organ or early keyboard.  

Snickel Lane Urban Art Award

An Award for a full-time international or domestic, undergraduate or postgraduate student in Fine Arts to create and display a public art work.

Faculty of Education and Social Work Doctoral Fees Bursary

Students will be considered for a Faculty of Education and Social Work Doctoral Fees Bursary at the time of application for a place in their doctoral programme.

The Marie Clay Literacy Trust Trainer Doctoral Scholarship

A Scholarship of up to $70,000 pa for research related to Reading Recovery as part of PhD or EdD in the Faculty of Education and Social Work. Next available in 2027.

Business School

He Manga Tauhokohoko | University of Auckland Business School Dean's Doctoral Scholarship

In 2024, the Scholarship provides a tax-free stipend of up to $33,825 pa, with an annual CPI adjustment to the stipend value, for up to 36 months of full-time study, plus tuition fees for international students who are eligible to study under the domestic fees policy, and the single student Health Insurance compulsory charge.

Students will be considered for a He Manga Tauhokohoko | University of Auckland Business School Dean's Doctoral Scholarship at the time of application for a place in their doctoral programme.  

Engineering

Faculty of Engineering Doctoral Scholarship

The Scholarship provides a tax-free stipend  for up to 36 months of full-time study, plus tuition fees for international students who are eligible to study under the domestic fees policy, and the single student Health Insurance compulsory charge.

Students will be considered for a Faculty of Engineering Doctoral Scholarship at the time of application for a place in their doctoral programme.  

AUEA Braithwaite-Thompson Graduate Research Awards

An Award of up to $10,000 for international students enrolled full-time in an ME, MOR or PhD study in the Faculty of Engineering.

Energy and Fuels Research Scholarship

A $5,000 Scholarship for international and domestic students enrolled full-time in a Masters or PhD in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering.

Jeannie Cheong Lean Eng Memorial Engineering Award

An Award to assist citizens of Malaysia studying postgraduate Engineering with a $3,000 contribution towards compulsory tuition fees.

Mercer Memorial Scholarship in Aeronautics

A $6,000 Scholarship to support a postgraduate student carrying out research in a field related to aeronautics.

Thanh Cao-Dac Postgraduate Engineering Award

An Award of up to $16,000 pa for up to four years, to support an international student from Vietnam enrolling in masters or PhD study in the Faculty of Engineering.

Murray Wren Doctoral Scholarship in Architecture

A Scholarship to support an international or domestic student enrolled full-time in a PhD in Architecture. The Scholarship is offered every three to four years, and provides a tax-free stipend of up to $33,000pa, with an annual CPI adjustment to the stipend value, for up to 36 months of full-time study, plus tuition fees for international students who are eligible to study under the domestic fees policy, and the single student Health Insurance compulsory charge. Next available from 2028.

Medical and Health Sciences & Liggins Institute

University of Auckland Senior Health Research Scholarship

A Scholarship of up to $40,590 pa plus compulsory fees for domestic and international students paying domestic fees, to support health professionals returning to University study for a doctorate in health related areas.

Eligible PhD or MD applicants to the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences or the Liggins Institute will be considered for this scholarship at the time of application for a place in their doctoral programme.

Dean's International Doctoral Scholarship (FMHS)

The Scholarship provides a tax-free stipend of up to $33,000 pa, with an annual cost of living adjustment to the stipend value, for up to 36 months of full-time study, plus tuition fees for international students who are eligible to study under the domestic fees policy, and the single student Health Insurance compulsory charge, and a one-off relocation grant of $3,000.

Students will be considered for a Dean's International Doctoral Scholarship (FMHS) at the time of application for a place in their doctoral programme.  

Law

University of Auckland Law School's Dean's Doctoral Scholarship

The Scholarship provides a tax-free stipend, with an annual cost of living adjustment to the stipend value, for up to 36 months of full-time study, plus tuition fees for international students who are eligible to study under the domestic fees policy, and the single student Health Insurance compulsory charge.

Students will be considered for a University of Auckland Law School's Dean's Doctoral Scholarship at the time of application for a place in their doctoral programme.  

Science

Alan Maxwell Science PhD Scholarship

A Scholarship of $33,000pa plus compulsory fees for domestic and international students undertaking PhD research in Physics, Computer Science or Mathematics.

Frederick Douglas Brown Postgraduate Science Research Scholarship

Two $10,000 Scholarships to support postgraduate study in Chemistry and Physics. International students must be a citizen of a member country of The Commonwealth.
