Physiology Studies

Physiology is the study of how the body works and what goes wrong in disease, from the cellular to the whole-body level.

Subject overview

Physiology explores how the body works. It provides a rational scientific basis for the treatment of disease.

At the core of Physiology is the acquisition of knowledge by observation, experiment and interpretation.

Physiology is highly quantitative and has close links with biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, mathematical modelling and pharmacology, as well as zoology and plant biology. A large part of medical research is centred on Physiology. It is an active and developing science that promises to be one of the most exciting disciplines for the foreseeable future.

Where can Physiology take you?

Physiology is one of six Bachelor of Science health majors that provide clear
pathways into selected year two clinical health programmes.

A major in Physiology opens doors to a wide and growing range of careers, both in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally.

Jayd Dayaram

Throughout my academic journey, I became fascinated by how physiology explains the cellular and molecular processes underlying human health and disease. Studying physiology opens pathways to careers with impact – from biomedical research to clinical practice, and the translational work that bridges them.

Jayd Dayaram BSc in Physiology, BSc (Hons) in Physiology
