Global Studies student stories
Global Studies: Steven Nuth
Steven is studying for his Bachelor of Global Studies, majoring in Global Politics and Human Rights. His Area Study is Asia and his language is Japanese.
I believe my degree will open doors to a career where I can make an impact on how New Zealand engages with the wider world.
“Global Studies gives you the knowledge to see the bigger picture, the skills to adapt in unfamiliar situations, and the confidence to work with people from all kinds of backgrounds. It’s challenging, exciting, and really prepares you to make a difference in a world that’s more connected than ever.
“Being from a small town, I was excited to make a change and study in our largest and most diverse city. This was a key factor in my decision, as it provides me the platform to engage with peoples, cultures, and perspectives from all around the world.
“I believe my degree will open doors to a career where I can make an impact on how New Zealand engages with the wider world. I hope to work in foreign policy for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade as I feel this aligns with my studies and allows me to apply the knowledge and analytical skills I’ve developed to real-world issues.ˮ
Global Studies: Leif Fernandez
Leif is studying for a Bachelor of Global Studies/Bachelor of Commerce conjoint. His Global Studies major is International Relations and Business. His area of study is Asia, with Chinese language. He is President of the Auckland University Global Studies Society (AUGSS).
The best part of being a Global Studies student is being part of a community where everyone is included and accepted.
Why International Relations?
“I chose International Relations as my major because of its breadth. You will study economics, international trade and politics courses, so you develop a wide range of skills. I had a keen interest in trade, and I thought it would be a great combination with my specialisation in Chinese.
“When I graduate, I would like to work in the public sector as a financial adviser or in a non-governmental organisation.”
Our study community
“The best part of being a Global Studies student is being part of a community where everyone is included and accepted. The people you meet along the way are really kind and sweet, so you develop long-lasting friendships.”

Global Studies definitely enabled me to adapt to different perspectives and use transferrable skills such as communication and analysis to work across many fields of knowledge.
A whole new approach
“The Bachelor of Global Studies attracted me as a degree because it was a whole new approach to what I wanted to study and eventually achieve in life. It focused on the idea of world citizenship, interconnectedness, and cross-cultural competency to develop skills such as critical thinking, and an all-round ability to adapt to a myriad of situations.
Working across many fields of knowledge
“I’ve had an absolute blast with my job so far. Global Studies definitely enabled me to adapt to different perspectives and use transferrable skills such as communication and analysis to work across many fields of knowledge.”
