“I have always been interested in countries and learning about their political geography, culture and languages. In high school I enjoyed Economics too, especially when that revolved around tangible issues or policy. When I realised I could pursue these interests further at university, it seemed like the perfect fit for me, combining important global politics and business relations subjects. I chose German as my language to reconnect with a bit of my heritage, having never learned the language growing up.
“Because there is no one set design for a Global Studies conjoint degree, this can be a fun challenge. I love the variety in which I can study. I can go from a maths-based Economics class, understanding economic models on a local level, to a class looking at international research on major global issues, seeking to find solutions. My programme choices are highly complementary too, as it has allowed me to take a larger variety of papers than normal with a standalone Global Studies or Commerce degree.
Every semester is new in Global Studies, especially with a conjoint degree. You meet so many different people every semester and connect with issues you never knew existed.
“Some of my favourite papers so far have been my German language papers. I love the bonds I have made with my peers in those classes, many of which I have followed through with since Stage One. Being a smaller programme it is more personal and closely taught, making the learning super engaging and supportive. We learn much more than language, with a lot of cultural knowledge and awareness taught as well. Mareike Schmidt has been an amazing teacher in this department too.
“The University has extremely lively extracurriculars to take part in too. I love checking out the Clubs Expo at the beginning of every semester and seeing all the new and existing clubs and their events for the year – there is a club suitable for every interest.
“I have also found a great community of friends and made amazing memories in my time with UN Youth NZ. This club has been particularly amazing for me as an organisation that advocates for civics education. We run workshops and events that cover a variety of subjects from all around the world, perfectly linking with my degree and interests.
“The Bachelor of Global Studies has helped me to navigate the world. It has given me the ability to see through global trends and realise the challenges faced across the world are not isolated to certain places; we all share common problems and solutions.
“I would like to work overseas with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade; advocating for New Zealand across a range of issues overseas is something I could find myself very happy doing.
“Although I am coming out of my degree in a particularly turbulent time for the world, I think my degree choice has only strengthened my skills across the board. From gaining traditional skills for the job market to a more holistic approach to make a change in the world, I feel my degree choice has only broadened my drive to get out in the world and make a difference.”
