Subject: IMPORTANT: Coronavirus exclusion affecting Studentsafe Inbound insurance policy

Dear [International Student]

IMPORTANT STUDENTSAFE INBOUND INSURANCE ANNOUNCEMENT

Allianz, the University’s insurance provider of Studentsafe Inbound, has issued important information regarding a change in coverage for Coronavirus-related claims.

Any Studentsafe inbound insurance policies placed after Thursday 30 January 2020 will be deemed to have been booked “with awareness of the Coronavirus”. For these policies, Allianz will not pay any claim “caused by, or in any way connected with, this event.”

This means that any medical costs, or cancellation/disruption to travel plans associated (even remotely) with the Coronavirus outbreak will not be covered by your Studentsafe Inbound policy.

Please note this new exclusion is placed by the insurer and is outside of the University’s control. Additionally, the University is not aware of any insurer that would currently cover Coronavirus- related costs through a new insurance policy.

HOW DO I KNOW WHEN MY INSURANCE POLICY WAS PLACED?

For new University students, their Studentsafe inbound policy is effective (i.e. placed) 31 days prior to the course start date. Returning University students who were insured in the preceding semester and are continuing with their studies are likely to have continuous cover as long as they are enrolled. More information on the University’s Studentsafe Insurance page.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY STUDENTSAFE POLICY WAS PLACED AFTER 30 JANUARY 2020 AND I EXPERIENCE COSTS RELATED TO THE CORONAVIRUS?

1) Medical costs related to Coronavirus: within New Zealand, as the Coronavirus is a notifiable disease, it is expected that key costs associated with the disease would be covered through public healthcare. More information: NZ Ministry of Health
2) Cancellation/curtailment: if you need to change your travel plans e.g. you are delayed coming to New Zealand because of Coronavirus-related reasons, you will be responsible for the cost of any changes.

WHO DO I CONTACT FOR FURTHER INFORMATION?

Students with an active Studentsafe inbound policy who wish to discuss a claim or how this applies to their situation can contact Studentsafe:

T: 0800 486 004 / +64 9 488 1638
E: claims@insurancesafenz.co.nz

Other questions, or where you are not sure that you have an active policy, please complete the University’s Coronavirus form, noting your insurance question.

WHAT IF I DO NOT HAVE A STUDENTSAFE INBOUND POLICY – AM I AFFECTED?

International students who have received a waiver to use an alternate approved insurance policy should check any changes to your policy and contact your insurer directly with any questions.

KEEP SAFE AND INFORMED

At this point there are no confirmed cases of the Coronavirus in New Zealand. More information on the Coronavirus in New Zealand is available on the New Zealand Ministry of Health site.

The University is committed to supporting you through these changes and associated uncertainty. Should you have any concerns about your particular situation that are not answered on the University’s Coronavirus update site please complete the online form.
