Managing research data workshop

An online workshop for researchers of all stages introducing policies, best practices and services to support you in planning, managing, and sharing research data.

Dates for 2026

Registration is open for the six workshops planned for this year:

  • Thursday 28 May, 10am-12pm
  • Wednesday 22 July, 1-3pm
  • Thursday 24 September, 10am-12pm
  • Tuesday 3 November, 1-3pm

Learning outcomes

Attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of good research data management
  • Identify relevant University policies and processes for research data management
  • Apply policies, data classification, and best practices to your research across the research data lifecycle
  • Find guidance, services, and support across the University for managing research data

After this workshop

Participants are encouraged to engage with their peers across the University research community, including workshop instructors and CeR staff, by joining HackyHour to post questions and exchange ideas.

Writing a data management plan workshop

A research data management plan (DMP) is required for any research project involving sensitive or restricted research data at the University.

In this workshop, we present the University's online DMP tool. We will go through the various components and offer best-practice examples and section-by-section advice for creating a research DMP.

In the second half of the workshop, we will support attendees to create a DMP for their own project.

Learning outcomes

Attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of good research data management planning and its key role in the responsible conduct of research.
  • Consider your research in terms of the research data lifecycle and apply policies, data classification, and best practices.
  • Be aware of the University’s online data management planning tool and where to find support and guidance.
  • Use the information in this workshop to develop a data management plan and maintain it throughout your research.

Researchers who need additional assistance with research data management planning can request in-person or online consultations through the Research data management consultation service.

Research data management policy and procedures for supervisors workshop

This online workshop provides an overview of the University's Research Data Management Policy. It also offers practical advice and links to relevant University services to help researchers navigate, for example, ethics, sovereignty, security, and data sharing. In-person workshops are available on request.

Attendance counts toward the development opportunities required for five-yearly reaccreditation of doctoral supervisors.

Managing sensitive research data for supervisors workshop

Through the lens of international and national frameworks, attendees will learn best practices, considerations and tools for managing sensitive research data.

This 90-minute online workshop extends the material covered in the Research Data Management Policy and procedures for supervisors workshop (In-person workshops are available on request).

Attendance counts toward the development opportunities required for five-yearly reaccreditation of doctoral supervisors.

  • If you are supervising sensitive research projects, especially those involving personally identifiable information or health data, we recommend that your postgraduate and doctoral students attend the Managing sensitive research data workshop and create a Data Management Plan (DMP).
