Human ethics external onboarding
External users can access the University of Auckland Ethics RM system, Human Ethics Guidelines and Human Ethics learning.
External users
External users can access the University of Auckland Ethics RM system, Human Ethics Guidelines and Human Ethics learning. These systems support the preparation, submission and review of Human Ethics applications. Each system requires a one-time registration.
External users are:
- Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora employees from Te Toka Tumai Auckland, Counties Manukau, Waitematā and Te Tai Tokerau who may be granted access to submit ethics applications to the Auckland Health Research Ethics Committee (AHREC).
- Lay members of the Auckland Health Research Ethics Committee (AHREC) and University of Auckland Human Participants Ethics Committee (UAHPEC).
If you are not affiliated with the University of Auckland or Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora you will not be able to register or access these systems.
Human ethical guidelines
Follow these steps to get access to the guidelines. Complete using a desktop web browser.
- Apply for a University of Auckland guest account by completing this form: Request access to the Ethical Guidelines SharePoint site. Please use the same work email address for all steps to ensure access.
- The University of Auckland will create your guest account. It should take approximately 5 days from receiving the application.
- You will receive an invite email from the University of Auckland when the guest account is created.
- Open the email and select Accept Invitation.
- You will then be redirected to the Microsoft sign-in page. Sign in using your work email and password. If you do not have a Microsoft account, you will be prompted to set one up to proceed.
- If you are from Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora you should now be able to access the Ethical Guidelines.
- For all other users who are not using a Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora work email address, you will receive an email confirming your access and link to the guidelines.
- You may be prompted again to sign in to the Microsoft sign-in page before accessing the guidelines. Sign in and follow any prompts for verification.
Infonetica Ethics RM
To access the Infonetica Ethics RM, a University of Auckland username is required. A University username consists of four letters and three digits, e.g. smar078.
Please ensure you use Chrome, Firefox or latest versions of Microsoft Edge or Safari web browsers to access the website. Ethics RM does not support Internet Explorer or older versions of Edge.
If you have previously been issued a University username, it can be linked to your Ethics RM profile for access. Please do not apply for a new username.
How to apply for a University of Auckland username for the first time
- Go to How to register with the University, and complete the form.
- Use your work email (for Health NZ) or preferred email (for lay members) address when registering.
- Once registered, call the Staff Service Centre (09 923 6000 select 2) and advise you are an external user requesting access to Ethics RM.
- Log into Ethics RM and update your personal details (found under your initials, top right).
- Update Department (your team) and Faculty (your region).
How to connect your University of Auckland username to Ethics RM
- Use your university issued username and password to log into Ethics RM.
- If you have previously been issued a University of Auckland username, it will need to be reactivated for use with Ethics RM.
- Call the Staff Service Centre on 09 923 6000 (select 2) and advise that you are an external user who needs your username activated to access Ethics RM.
- Log into Ethics RM and update your personal details (found under your initials, top right).
- Update Department (your team) and Faculty (your region).
General information
- Allow up to 15 minutes after access is requested, before you can log in to Ethics RM.
- Your email will not be searchable in Ethics RM until your first login.

Human ethics learning
These online learning modules are ideal for those new to research ethics or would like a refresher. The 13 modules each cover an important topic related to ethical research involving human participants. The modules align with the University of Auckland Ethical Guidelines.
To access the modules:
- Apply for a University of Auckland identity.
- Go to: Human Ethics in Research and click on "Join this course"
