What motivated you to choose the University of Auckland for your studies?
“Its reputation as New Zealand’s leading university and for the global recognition of its programmes. My programme offers both technical training and practical business applications, which aligns with my background in product management and data analytics. When I worked as a Product Manager at Tencent in China, I realised that my data analysis skills still had room for improvement, and I had always hoped to study abroad.
A friend who was studying in New Zealand highly recommended the University to me, which gave me the confidence that this was the right place for me.”
What aspects of your programme do you enjoy most or value most?
“The emphasis on applying analytical tools to real-world business challenges. I enjoy the balance between technical training, such as Python, R, and SQL, and the opportunity to translate data insights into strategic decisions. The programme also encourages collaboration and problem-solving in group projects, which I find rewarding as it mirrors the teamwork required in industry.”
What can you say about your experience with CDES and the Workplace Insights Programme (WIP)?
“My experience with CDES and WIP has been invaluable. Under my mentor, I received guidance on my CV and cover letter, LinkedIn profile, and effective networking. He also introduced me to the New Zealand job market and workplace culture, which gave me more confidence in interviews and career planning.
As someone who was also an international student, he understood the challenges we face and gave great advice to help us navigate these hurdles. His example of professionalism and persistence was inspiring and motivating, helping me feel more prepared and optimistic about my future career in New Zealand.”
What do you enjoy most about living in Auckland?
“The inclusive and open environment; people are welcoming and supportive. I also value the beautiful natural surroundings and the peaceful lifestyle, which provide a great balance to my busy study and work schedule. The friendliness of the community makes it easy to feel at home and truly enjoy life here.”
What are your plans for your career or further study and how do you think can your degree, CDES or WIP can help take you there?
“My plan is to build a long-term career here, focusing on data analytics and product management. I am already working part-time at PB Tech as a livestream product operations specialist, where I apply the data analysis and marketing knowledge gained from my degree to real business challenges.
CDES and WIP have helped me adapt my overseas experience to the New Zealand job market and workplace culture. Their support in CV guidance, interview practice, and networking will be invaluable as I continue to pursue career opportunities here.”
What would be your advice for those thinking about making the move to study at the University of Auckland?
“Stay proactive and open-minded. Take the initiative to explore different opportunities, whether it’s joining student clubs, attending CDES workshops, or applying for internships, because these experiences help you grow both academically and personally. Don’t be afraid to try new things, ask questions, and connect with people, as the University provides plenty of support and a welcoming environment for international students.”
What’s life like at City Campus? What’s the best part of the campus?
“Life at the City Campus is convenient and full of energy. The best part for me is the Hiwa, the new gym, which is an excellent space to balance study with fitness and wellbeing.”
What is it like being part of your student club?
“Yes, I am part of the Chinese Postgraduate Society. The club organises activities such as the Postgraduate Fair and Club Expo, which bring together students from different backgrounds. These events are a great way to make new friends, build networks, and connect with the wider postgraduate community."
