Programme overview

You’ll gain practical grounding in Biomedical Science through hands-on, case-based learning that links molecular and cellular discoveries to medical advances. Your biomedical study will be complemented with courses in Global Studies, building language skills and intercultural understanding. Direct entry from Year 1 into Year 2 clinical programmes prepares you for postgraduate clinical and research pathways in New Zealand and overseas.

Programme structure

The BBiomedSc/BGlobalSt usually takes four years to complete.

You will need to complete a total of 540 points, consisting of:

  • 255 points from BBiomedSc courses
  • 255 points from BGlobalSt courses
  • 15 points General Education
  • 15 points from courses available for any programme at this University.

For Biomedical Science, you will be completing a range of core courses across Stages I, II and III, which are aimed at developing your biomedical knowledge and professional skills throughout the degree.

Students who are intending to apply for selection into the Year 2 clinical programmes must also take specific courses in order to be eligible for clinical selection. Please consult the pages of the relevant Year 2 clinical programmes for detailed information.

For the Global Studies component, you will choose one major from the three options available:

  • Global Environment and Sustainable Development
  • Global Politics and Human Rights
  • International Relations and Business

You will also take core courses in Global Studies and study a language and a related area of the world. See the Bachelor of Global Studies

Students usually enrol in eight 15-point courses (120 points) each year. However, if you want to complete in four years, you can enrol in nine 15-point courses (135 points) each year (including Summer School). Note that enrolling in five courses in one semester is not advisable for Global Studies students.

You need to maintain a Grade Point Average of 3.5 each year to continue with your conjoint.

You will need to take one General Education course.

  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level. You must have completed a minimum of three A-Level subjects.
