Programme overview

You'll develop a strong foundation in Biomedical Science through an integrated, case-based curriculum that explores the biological basis of health and disease, from molecules and cells to whole-body systems.

Combined with studies in Law, this conjoint degree equips you to navigate the ethical, legal and regulatory challenges arising from advances in medicine, biotechnology and healthcare, while developing the analytical and communication skills valued across a wide range of professions.

The programme offers direct entry from Year 1 into Year 2 clinical programmes so long as you meet entry requirements. It also prepares you for postgraduate clinical and research pathways in New Zealand and overseas.

Programme structure

The BBiomedSc/LLB(Hons) takes 5 years (10 semesters) if you are studying full-time. You will need to complete 675 points, including:

  • 255 points from BBiomedSc courses
  • 405 points from LLB(Hons) courses
  • 15 points General Education

For Law, in your first year, you are required to complete three Stage I core Law courses and four Stage I courses from the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (BBiomedSc). You must also complete WTRMHS 100, as well as a General Education course at an appropriate point during your programme of study.

To complete the full programme within five years, you will need to enrol in 135 points per year, which exceeds the standard full-time enrolment of 120 points per year. Alternatively, you may choose to enrol in 120 points per year over five years, followed by an additional semester of 75 points, enabling completion of the programme in five and a half years (11 semesters).

You will have the choice of a wide range of Law elective courses, including Corporate and Commercial, Public, Criminal, International, Family, and Environmental Law.

For Biomedical Science, you will be doing a range of core courses across Stages I, II and III which are aimed at developing your biomedical knowledge and professional skills throughout the degree.

Students who are intending to apply for selection into the Year 2 clinical programmes must also take specific courses in order to be eligible for clinical selection. Please consult the online programme pages of the relevant Year 2 clinical programmes for detailed information.

You need to maintain a Grade Point Average of 3.5 each year to continue with your conjoint.

Entry is by invitation for high-achieving Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Laws (BSc/LLB) Part II students.

To be considered for the Honours programme in Law, you must achieve a B+ average or higher across all your Law courses at the completion of LLB Part II during your BSc/LLB . (This is usually at the end of your third year.)

Fees are set in advance of each calendar year and will be updated on this website. Fees are inclusive of 15% GST, but do not include the Student Services Fee, course books, travel and health insurance, or living costs. Amounts shown are indicative only. In addition to the tuition fees, there is a Student Services Fee of $9.44 per point, estimated at $1,132.80 for full-time study (120 points).
