Programme overview

You’ll gain a strong practical grounding in Biomedical Science through case-based, hands-on learning that shows how molecular and cellular discoveries become medical advances. You’ll also be equipped to drive positive change in sport and health, addressing issues such as mental health, fitness and food. The degree offers direct entry from Year 1 into Year 2 clinical programmes, with strong preparation for postgraduate clinical and research pathways in New Zealand and overseas.

Programme structure

The BBiomedSc/BSportHPE usually takes four years to complete.

You will need to complete a total of 540 points, consisting of:

  • 255 points from BBiomedSc courses
  • 255 points from BSportHPE courses
  • 15 points General Education
  • 15 points from courses available for any programme at this University.

For Sport, Health and Physical Education you'll gain specialised knowledge in an area of particular interest while also developing a broad general knowledge of the worlds of sport, health and physical education.

In addition to compulsory core courses, you could choose one of five specialised pathways. Alternatively, you could opt for a range of courses without specifying a pathway.

For Biomedical Science, you will be taking a range of core courses across Stages I, II and III, which are aimed at developing your biomedical knowledge and professional skills throughout the degree.

Students who intend to apply for selection into a Year 2 clinical programme must also take specific courses in order to be eligible for clinical selection. Please consult the relevant online programme pages for detailed information.

Students usually enrol in nine 15-point courses (135 points) each year if they wish to complete in four years.

You need to maintain a Grade Point Average of 3.5 each year to continue with your conjoint.
