Meet a major requirement or try a subject you’re interested in by taking one or two courses at the University of Auckland without committing to a full programme.
Programme structure
A Certificate of Proficiency provides you with the opportunity:
- To supplement your current knowledge before proceeding to advanced study
- To undertake a small number of courses in specific areas of interest without enrolling in a formal qualification. It is also an option if you want to study just one or two courses.
- To undertake a limited number of University of Auckland courses while being enrolled at another tertiary institution.
If you decide you have a taste for learning and want to reassign the points from your COP course to a qualification, our student advisers can help plan the best study option for you.
Most students need to take one or two General Education courses.
Students should also be aware of the University’s Academic English Language Requirement.

- International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum total score of 24.
- General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level. You must have completed a minimum of three A-Level subjects.
- Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). You must have completed a minimum of three A-level subjects.
GCE ‘A’ Level requirements apply to ‘A’ Level qualifications examined by bodies such as AQA, OCR, Edexcel, WJEC, CCEA and Pearson Education Limited taken outside of New Zealand.

How much does a Certificate of Proficiency cost per year?
2024 fees
Fees for the Certificate of Proficiency varies for each course. For individual course fees, please refer to Fees by faculty.
Fees are set in advance of each calendar year and will be updated on our website. Fees are inclusive of 15% GST, but do not include the Student Services Fee, course books, travel and health insurance, or living costs. Amounts shown are indicative only. In addition to the tuition fees, there is a Student Services Fee of $8.02 per point in 2021.
