Erin Buchanan, Hub and Operations Manager

After ten years in London and leading teams across the coworking and tech sectors, Erin returned home to Auckland to support innovation and entrepreneurship through CIE.

Tell us a little about your background and how you ended up at the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE).

I’m originally from Auckland and spent the last ten years living and working in Central London before returning home to New Zealand in mid-2025 with my husband and our now 2.5-year-old daughter to be closer to family.

I began my career in project-based roles across government and community organisations in New Zealand, including two years with one of the country’s largest health boards. Those early experiences provided a strong foundation in working within values-driven organisations and delivering meaningful outcomes for communities.

After moving to the UK, I joined a large co-working business where I led operations, facilities, events, programming, and community engagement across multiple sites. I managed large teams and supported significant revenue portfolios while creating vibrant environments for businesses and entrepreneurs to thrive. In 2021, I transitioned into the technology sector, leading the growth of a marketplace business across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA).

Following maternity leave in 2023 and our subsequent relocation back to New Zealand, I was looking for an opportunity that combined operational leadership with purpose and impact. The Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship was a natural fit, allowing me to apply my experience in a setting that supports innovation, learning, and entrepreneurship right here in Aotearoa.

What does your job involve?

As Hub & Operations Manager, I lead the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of CIE’s operations and reporting functions. Alongside the team, I oversee the day-to-day management of Unleash Space and ensure our staff, students, and programmes, have the operational support they need to succeed.

Any words of advice for students and staff at the beginning of their entrepreneurial journeys?

Know your “why” and don’t wait for the perfect moment to start. Some of the best opportunities come from putting yourself out there, being curious, and learning as you go.

If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?

My late mum. She taught me the importance of laughter, honesty, and always seeing the glass as half full. Every dinner with her came with plenty of wisdom, great conversation, and exceptional cooking.

When you’re not working, what would we find you doing?

You’ll usually find me exploring Auckland with my husband and daughter. After spending so many years overseas, we love discovering new corners of the city and making the most of being back home. Otherwise, I’m often in search of a great coffee, a good book, or a hot Pilates class whenever I can fit one in.
