Makerspace
The Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship runs a dedicated makerspace within its innovation hub Kura Matahuna Unleash Space. This is your space to learn, experiment, design, iterate and prototype.
Whether you’re exploring a new technology, developing a competition entry, building a venture, or testing an idea for the first time, you’ll be supported for hands-on learning in a safe, well-equipped environment.
Access is structured so you can build confidence as you go. Training is self-directed, giving you the freedom to learn at your own pace, with friendly Creative Technologists on hand when you need guidance or get stuck.
This is where ideas become tangible.
Equipment Available
We’ll provide you with access to a range of prototyping and fabrication tools to support design, experimentation and iteration.

10am–2pm – General access
2pm–4pm – Makerspace Residency
All access occurs during staffed hours to ensure safe operation and support.
Closed during semester breaks for maintenance and servicing.
How Access Works
The makerspace is free for all students and staff of Waipapa Taumata Rau, the University of Auckland. Access is earned through training and certification.
Begin with the online safety induction to gain General Membership access. Then certify in the technologies you need, and start experimenting, designing and creating.
1. General Membership
Complete the online safety induction and quiz to access:
- Desk space
- Hand tools
- General makerspace use
This gives you the foundation to begin experimenting and creating in the space.
2. Technology Certification
To use specific equipment (e.g. 3D printing, laser cutting, electronics), complete:
1. Online introduction training and quiz
2. In-person benchmark challenge
You’ll create a defined artefact that demonstrates safe and competent use. Once approved, your certification is recorded and you can independently use that technology.
Training is self-directed, with Creative Technologists available to guide, troubleshoot and support your learning journey.
