About the Staff Common Room Club

The Staff Common Room Club, located in Old Government House since 1971, was established over 45 years ago to help promote collegiality and social interaction among staff and PhD candidates at the University. Members can now enjoy the facilities in recently refurbished Buttery Bar and the efficient service in a streamlined café.

Membership entitles you and your guests to an enjoyable, comfortable dining experience with exclusive bar facilities in a relaxed environment all on some of the more picturesque grounds of the University.

At a glance, membership entitles you to

  • subsidised cafe and bar.
  • billiard room.
  • reading lounge.
  • meeting rooms.

Membership also entitles you to discounted venue hire rates, should you want to hire rooms for private functions such as weddings, anniversaries or for formal or informal meetings.

For just $115 a year, all University staff who have, as a minimum, a 12 month contract can join the Staff Common Room Club.

This can be paid in full or as an automatic fortnightly deduction from your pay - this works out to be a little less than $5 per fortnight.

PhD candidates are also eligible to become members and have an annual subscription fee of $25 (including GST), payable by EFTPOS, cash or cheque (made out to The University of Auckland Staff Common Room).

Membership entitles you to a number of benefits. In addition to those mentioned above, the Staff Common Room Club hosts a number of social functions each year, including wine tastings, whisky tastings and Strawberry and Champagne socials. We can also cater for private functions, from 10 to 200 guests.
