Ban on e-bikes, e-scooters and similar devices in University buildings now in effect
Updated Friday 1 May 2026
The University supports and encourages sustainable travel choices, including the use of electric bikes, scooters and other low-emission transport options.
As the use of these items has grown, there is also increased awareness of the fire risks associated with their lithium batteries. To help keep our community safe, the following requirements are being introduced in line with the University’s new Fire Safety Standard.
As of today, Friday 1 May 2026, electric scooters, bikes, and other personal electric transport devices (including their batteries) are not permitted to be taken inside any University building. This includes offices, teaching spaces, common areas, halls of residence, and other University accommodation.
These devices may only be stored in designated University bike and scooter storage areas* and may only be charged where approved charging points are provided.
Charging batteries inside any University building is strictly prohibited.
Lithium battery fires can escalate rapidly, release highly toxic smoke, and are difficult to extinguish, posing a serious risk to people and property.
These requirements apply to all staff, students, contractors and visitors and align with safety controls being adopted by a large proportion of universities worldwide.
Personal mobility aids used by people with disabilities, such as wheelchairs, are not affected.
