Reginal Ufaka Obimae

A recipient of the Manaaki New Zealand scholarship, Reginal is completing a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring economics. He plans to return to his home of Solomon Islands to serve in a public service role.

Reginal first learned about the Manaaki New Zealand scholarship through friends who were recipients. “It was a privilege to be awarded this scholarship because without it, I wouldn’t be here studying. The scholarship plays a significant role in easing financial stress and provides the opportunity for global exposure and learning from a world class university.”

“My study programme has analytical and problem-solving skills, which I really enjoy. This involves developing and testing economic models, applying game theory to analyse consumer and producer behaviour, and exploring the causal effects of economic policies in society.

“I also find learning and understanding real-world issues such as inflation, unemployment, inequality, and global trade really interesting since we are learning about current issues and how to manage or solve them.”

“I plan to return to the Solomon Islands after completing my studies and serve in the government ministries, should there be any opportunity. I can apply the knowledge and skills I obtained and, above all, to gain experience in the working environment before pursuing further studies. Continuing with further studies after my degree should be manageable because it will be a continuation of the economic foundation I have built.”

The University has highly qualified lecturers, instructors, and learning facilities, creating a great learning experience for students, especially for those of us who did not have such facilities back in our country.

“I chose the University of Auckland not only for its ranking in New Zealand and globally, but also because it is in the heart of Auckland city. I really enjoy hiking, and I’m excited to hike some of Auckland’s most iconic landscapes, such as Rangitoto Island, Waitakere Ranges, Mount Eden, and Hunua Ranges. These landscapes provide unforgettable views and breathtaking adventure experiences.

Reginal has encouraging words for those thinking about making the move to study at the University of Auckland. “There are so many things to enjoy in New Zealand, from hiking the stunning mountains in Auckland to skiing in the South Island. Maximise your time and experience here, don't restrict learning only to the classroom, but to expand it outside through meeting new people, visiting places, and learning New Zealand culture and traditions.”

If you come from a warmer climate, he reminds you to “always prepare to experience the country’s winter with frequent rainfall and strong wind, so a rain jacket should be a must-bring item in your luggage.”
