How do I become a registered psychologist?

To be registered with the New Zealand Psychologist Board, you need a minimum of a masters degree in Psychology, as well as a 1500-hour internship.

Grade Point Average

The minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) required is generally stated as being 5.0 in the Academic Calendar regulations. 

However, due to the large number of applications, the Honours GPA is typically around 7.0 or higher depending on the specific programme.

A Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology (PGDipSci) may have a lower entry level. 

Stage III Psychology points

The minimum academic requirements for entry into postgraduate programmes is a GPA of 5.0, either overall or in 60 points above Stage II (including at least 45 points from the Stage III Psychology major schedule).

Research Methods in Psychology

If you wish to undertake a postgraduate Psychology programme at the University of Auckland (excluding PGDipSci), you must complete PSYCH 306 - Research Methods, or equivalent from another university in their undergraduate programme.
