Coming from a large mixed-race family in South Auckland, I wasn’t entirely confident about what I wanted to do after high school. University didn’t feel unattainable, as I am the first in my family to attend. I decided to apply for the Summer Start programme to see whether tertiary study could be part of my future. After spending six incredible weeks over the summer, I discovered that university is precisely where I want to be, and I am now continuing my journey in higher education.

Before summer started, I imagined university as only about strict academic study and far more rigid than high school. Summer Start completely changed that perception. Cheryl and her amazing team created a supportive and welcoming environment where I felt a strong sense of belonging. Through the programme, I formed lifelong friendships with people I still see almost daily.

One of my highlights was taking Academic English 101 during the programme. This paper became the foundation for my enjoyment of university life. With the guidance and support of the lecturers, Summer Start leaders, and my fellow students, I built the confidence and skills that have carried through into my studies today. Summer Start also introduced me to all campus student services and opportunities, and offered free food in these sessions. It also felt like a sneak peek of the clubs' expo and campus life that awaited me in Semester One.

I recommend Summer Start for anyone unsure whether university suits them. It offers a perfect balance between fun, community-building activities and academic preparation. Most importantly, it made me feel 110% more prepared when Semester One began. Summer Start gave me the confidence to be myself, the tools to succeed, and friendships that will last a lifetime.
