Creative technologists support our community through technology certifications, hands-on prototyping support, running workshops, and assisting members with their innovative or personal projects.
A creative technologist (CT) is a highly motivated and creative student who loves to make things, prototype ideas, and share their knowledge with the University community. They are role models for the CIE’s maker space and support our community through technology certifications, hands-on prototyping support, running workshops, and assisting members with their innovative or personal projects.
We are looking for new CTs to join our existing incredible, diverse, talented, cross-faculty team. Applicants will stand out by showing a passion for making and prototyping, already being involved in the CIE or maker space community, having enough availability for an average of eight hours a week, and having a friendly personality with strong communication skills. Valuable additions include expertise in a “maker” discipline such as sewing, electronics, woodwork, crafts, CAD, etc., and having already completed many of the maker space equipment trainings.
The CT position is a casual contract with an average of eight hours of work a week during semester and optional hours outside of semester.
The hours are scheduled through an open-shift system that allows you to choose shifts that fit your availability.
The position is based on campus and will involve tasks in the CIE’s Kura Matahuna, Unleash Space maker space.

What you’ll do
As a creative technologist, you will:
- Lead and support maker space activity - provide technical and prototyping guidance to our community and help members progress their ideas into tangible outputs.
- Facilitate equipment certifications - ensure members understand how to safely and confidently use tools like laser cutters, 3D printers, vinyl cutters, CNC routers, sewing machines, and more.
- Deliver workshops and training sessions - design and run engaging, learner-centric workshops for both curricular and co-curricular audiences.
- Contribute to maker space culture - help create an inclusive, supportive environment where experimentation and creativity thrive.
- Assist with events - support special events and activities within the maker space.
- Maintain professional standards - keep equipment in good working order and the space organised, safe and welcoming.
Who we’re looking for
You’ll thrive in this role if you:
- Are currently enrolled at the University of Auckland
- Can commit to an average of 8 hours per week, with a flexible open-shift schedule
- Bring a passion for making, prototyping, and learning
- Communicate clearly and enjoy working with people
- Have experience or interest in one or more “maker” disciplines such as electronics, woodwork, CAD, sewing, crafts, digital fabrication, etc. (beneficial but not mandatory)
Prior training on maker space equipment is an advantage, but not a requirement.
Hourly rate (2026)
$30.94 per hour
