Impact of staff giving

An uplifting highlight from the challenges of 2020 was the generosity of staff and former staff.

Our staff supporters are at the heart of many students’ journeys to education and the vital research that takes place across the University. This in turn helps to create the leaders of tomorrow and drives the revolutionary ideas that will shape our future.

Student support update

Over the last year there has been an outpouring of support for our student community. Staff, alumni and friends have come together during these uncertain times to help break down social and financial barriers that stand between bright young students and a first-class education. This is helping students like Tayla-Lee Lorraine who is in her first year studying a Bachelor of Global Studies/Arts conjoint.

From a young age Tayla-Lee would take trips to the city and often visited Albert Park.

I adored the Clock Tower and dreamed of attending University. I am proud because I  reached the goals of my younger self and this has only been made possible because of the scholarship I received.

Tayla-Lee

Tayla-Lee has ambitious aspirations for the future. She’s working towards a governmental position where she can make a difference in the areas that she is passionate about. Her focus is on helping women and young girls who fall victim to sexual abuse, and also the education around this.

When asked what she’d say to the donors who have made her University education possible she said:

I would thank them for believing I am worthy to be awarded this scholarship. I appreciate their faith in my abilities and for giving me the opportunity to extend my capabilities.

Staff and alumni support underprivileged students

Staff and alumni supported the Annual Appeal in 2020 which raised over $150,000. The appeal supports students like Tatiana Faaiu who, without generous donations, may not have been able to attend University due to financial constraints.

There aren't enough words to express how grateful and appreciative I am and how much this support has impacted my life in such a positive way.

Period poverty eased by donations to student well-being fund

Free sanitary products are now available at the University, funded by donations from the ‘Staff for Students: Well-being Fund’.

Having access to menstrual products is a pragmatic way we can support the well-being and health of students to help them thrive.

Brian Boyd donates Rutherford Medal $100k to scholarships

A student who is the first in her family to attend university has had her life made easier by a generous gift from distinguished academic Brian Boyd.

My New Zealand teachers saw something in me. My teachers in Fiji doubted me; one told me I’d never get anywhere. That just made me more determined.
