Huarahi Māori

Overview

If you are a confident Te Reo Māori speaker and want to teach in Māori medium (immersion) or bilingual schools, this specialisation will give you the qualification to do so.

Areas of study

The programme covers educational theory, educational and developmental psychology, the sociology of education, effective teaching techniques and how to apply these in your teaching. Te Reo Māori, tikanga Māori and mātauranga Māori underpin this teaching specialisation.

What you will learn

You will develop in-depth knowledge of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, the national curriculum for Māori medium education, and its application in schools. You will learn how to link educational theory to your teaching practice. Practicum placements in schools will provide consistent opportunities to develop your pedagogical knowledge and skills in authentic contexts.

Career opportunities

With a degree in Māori medium teaching, you will be qualified to teach in Māori medium (immersion), bilingual and mainstream schools and classrooms. The Huarahi Māori programme qualifies you to teach at primary and intermediate school level.
