Health services

The University provides students with a professional primary healthcare service ensuring the health and wellbeing of our student community. Recently completing the CORNERSTONE practice accreditation programme, the University Health and Counselling Service is the highest quality standard a general practice can achieve in New Zealand.

Services include:

• doctor and nurse consultations
• illness management
• family planning, sexual health and contraception advice and checks
• medical certificates – both general and specialised (eg scholarship medicals, Outward Bound medicals or medicals for insurance)
• minor surgery, prescriptions, travel advice and immunisations
• injury management, eg, ACC injury assessments and treatment.

Appointments are available for all students who enrol with University Health and Counselling. Learn more about Primary Health Organisation enrolment.

Those who are enrolled with us save money on consultation fees and prescription costs. International students can also register and the cost of most services will be covered by your insurance.

If you aren’t enrolled with us or you are enrolled at another clinic you may be directed back to your usual doctor or to the closest accident and medical (A&M) clinic.  

The quickest way to make an appointment is by phone. You can also visit the centre in person but this may take longer as there may be queues. When visiting in person or when calling in for your appointment, you must present your Student ID card.

If you have an urgent health need and require a same day appointment you will need to present in person to the clinic. If your condition meets the criteria for assessment you will be seen by a nurse. Please note same day nurse consults are limited and you may be required to make a future appointment. We cannot guarantee same day appointments.

We offer a confidential counselling service, that provides a wide range of support services across all of our campuses. We have experienced counsellors and psychologists, and can provide brief therapy as well as group and academic consultations.

Our counselling services are free to all domestic students.
For international students, the service will be covered by your insurance policy.

Repeat prescriptions without the need to see a doctor are available to enrolled patients with certain stable conditions.

A previous visit to the University Health and Counselling Service is required.

You will still need to see you doctor at regular intervals for monitoring to review your progress.

How do I request a repeat prescription?

You can request a repeat prescription through the MyIndici Portal. You first need to register to access the portal. 

You can also phone 0800 698 427 or email the nurse on uhcsnurse@auckland.ac.nz.

All requests for repeat prescriptions are handled by one of our practice nurses, who will be in touch with you if there are any questions or concerns regarding your request.

Collection times

Your prescription will be sent directly to your preferred pharmacy and will be ready for you to collect in three working days.

Urgent Requests

If you need an urgent prescription you will need to be seen at UHCS.

The Health Information Privacy Code sets specific privacy rules for agencies in the health sector. It covers the collection of health information, how it's used and stored, and when it can be disclosed by health agencies.

The code takes the place of the information privacy principles for the health sector.

The gardasil vaccination is now avaliable for all female and male students who are New Zealand residents or citizens under the age of 27.

The gardasil vaccination is the best way to help protect against human papillomavirus (HPV). The vaccine works by causing the body to produce its own protection (virus-fighting antibodies) against HPV. For more information on the virus and vaccine head to the New Zealand website.

A nurse-led Diabetes Clinic will be available at the University Health and Counselling Service at University of Auckland on the first Wednesday of each month, for students attending University of Auckland and Auckland University of Technology and residing in the Auckland catchment area.

The best time for most people to be vaccinated against influenza is just before the start of the winter season – in New Zealand, this is between April and June.
