Visa information for Exchange and Study Abroad

Instructions for submitting your student visa application if you are a new Study Abroad or Exchange student studying at the University of Auckland for one or two semesters.

You must apply for a valid visa through the Immigration New
Zealand (INZ) website as soon as you have received an Offer of Place. You will
need to apply for the right type of visa. To do this, please check the
programme name in the Offer of Place you received from the University of
Auckland and follow the appropriate steps below.

Certificate of Proficiency Exchange (COPEX)

If your programme name is COPEX, you must apply for an Exchange Student Visa. INZ will request “evidence you have been accepted as an exchange student” and "confirmation that your programme of study is at least 120 credits.” You can upload our Offer of Place to both areas, as it has wording to meet the requirements.

Certificate of Proficiency Overseas (COPOS)

If your programme name is COPOS, you must apply for a Fee-Paying Student Visa. For this visa, you will need to provide a tuition fee receipt and evidence of living costs.

Tuition fee receipt

  • For students who have paid tuition fee to your home university or provider, you can upload the Offer of Place in this section. It includes special wording regarding the fee payment arrangement between the University of Auckland and your home university or provider.
  • Students who receive government funding or scholarship for tuition fees can upload a confirmation letter for it.
  • If you are responsible for University of Auckland tuition fee payment, you must pay the tuition fee first and generate a statement or receipt to upload it.

Evidence of living costs

  • If you have paid the accommodation fee to your home university or provider, they will provide a letter confirming this. You can upload the letter in this section.
  • If you have government funding or a scholarship for your living cost during the semester in Auckland, please upload a funding/scholarship confirmation letter.
  • Otherwise, you must provide a bank statement showing you have sufficient funds. It can be your bank statement or your parents.

Other types of visas

You may apply for a different type of visa depending on the length of programme and country of origin. Please contact the Immigration New Zealand directly if you think you can travel to New Zealand with another type of visa.

Working holiday visa holders from eligible countries can study full-time up to 6 months, but you should consider you can only apply for working holiday visa once in your life, so you cannot use it again in future. New Zealand and Australian passport holders do not need a visa to enter New Zealand.

Please contact us at studyabroad@auckland.ac.nz if you have
any questions.
