Programme overview

Find your voice. Complement your legal studies with a wide range of pathways offered within Communication.

By studying Law, you will arm yourself with a skill set that meets the high demands of many careers, inside and outside of the legal profession.

Combining Law with Communication, you will learn how to analyse ideas and issues raised in your studies and effectively communicate these concepts and solutions to others.

Programme structure

The BC/LLB(Hons) takes 5.5 years (11 semesters) if you are studying full-time. You will need to complete 735 points:

  • 255 points from BC courses
  • 465 points from LLB/LLB(Hons) courses
  • 15 points from a General Education course*

*We recommend you choose WTRAED 100 Waipapa Taumata Rau: Introduction to Te Pūtahi Mātauranga, Arts and Education as your General Education course.

In your first year you will need to complete three Stage I core LLB courses, and five Stage I courses from the BC. You will continue to take a mix of Law courses and Communication courses in each of your second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth years.

You will have the choice of a wide range of Law elective courses, including Corporate and Commercial, Public, Criminal, International, Family, and Environmental Law.

To complete in 5.5 years (11 semesters) you will need to enrol in a total of 615 points in your second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth years. This is a higher load than the standard enrolment of 120 points a year. Alternatively you could enrol in 120 points in 5 years and 135 points in one year to complete in six years (12 semesters).

You need to maintain a Grade Point Average of 3.5 each year to continue with your conjoint.

Most students need to take one General Education course.

Students should also be aware of the University’s Academic English Language Requirement.

Secondary school qualifications

  • International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum total score of 24.
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level. You must have completed a minimum of three A-Level subjects. 
  • Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). You must have completed a minimum of three A-level subjects.

GCE ‘A’ Level requirements apply to ‘A’ Level qualifications examined by bodies such as AQA, OCR, Edexcel, WJEC, CCEA and Pearson Education Limited taken outside of New Zealand.

Fees are inclusive of 15% GST, but do not include the Student Services Fee, course books, travel and health insurance, or living costs. Amounts shown are indicative only. In addition to the tuition fees, there is a Student Services Fee of $9.44 per point, estimated at $6,938.40 for full-time study (735 points). Fees will be confirmed upon completion of enrolment into courses.
