Summer Start

Designed for school leavers, our Summer Start programme lets you earn credits towards your degree, experience our campus and get started on your academic journey. Classes start in January 2021.

What is Summer Start?

Summer Start is a six-week programme giving eligible* school leavers the opportunity to gain credits towards their degree and start their university journey early.

If you’re planning to study in Semester One 2021, Summer Start can help you make the transition to university life that much easier. It’s a great opportunity to make the most of the summer and gain the skills you need to survive and thrive at university.

If you’re from outside the Auckland area, you can also apply for an accommodation scholarship to live on campus for the duration of the programme. See the University of Auckland Summer Start Scholarship.

We’ve also put together a special Orientation day for Summer Start students on Thursday 10 December, 9am to 3:30pm. You’ll be able to experience our campus, meet our awesome staff and mentors, and get to know your future classmates! It’s also your chance to ask any questions you may have about the programme before it starts in January.

All you need to do is register your interest below and one of our friendly programme advisors will be in touch to find out more about your goals and talk you through your options.

*The Summer Start programme is free for New Zealand school leaver students who meet the eligibility requirements of the New Zealand government’s Fees Free tertiary education initiative.

What will I be doing at Summer Start?

During the programme, you will complete one course from the 2021 Summer Start course list that will go towards your University of Auckland degree programme^ before Semester One classes start on 1 March 2021. There’s a diverse range of courses to choose from, and we’re sure we can find one that’s right for you.

The focus for Summer Start is not just on academic preparation. You’ll have access to mentoring and support options to help you get the most out of your studies, and receive a free gym membership for the duration of the programme.

Have some fun outside of class time, with everything from sports competitions to outdoor movies to quiz challenges. You can even hit the water for a waka hourua sailing experience!
