Planning your trip

Arrange travel and health insurance

Health and travel insurance is important to avoid unwanted high costs relating to medical care and life events while abroad.

If your home university is arranging insurance for you, please ensure that your policy fully covers you as per the requirements of the New Zealand government’s Education Code of Practice to avoid any risk.

Alternatively, we can arrange coverage for you under the University’s preferred insurance policy: Studentsafe Inbound University Policy from Allianz Partners.

Since you will not be enrolled as a student at the University of Auckland, we have to get your authorisation before arranging your insurance. If you would like to do so, please contact: ISinsurance@auckland.ac.nz. Please request the coverage within the first 2 weeks of your research start date.

Book your flights

Be sure to discuss dates and time frames early, and double-check the dates before you book your tickets.

Sort out your accommodation

University Accommodation may not be available for short-term stay students except during summer break (December to January). Please contact Accommodation Solutions to check their availability.

If University Accommodation is not available, you can easily find private student housings, hotels, hostels or Airbnb nearby because the University is located downtown in the city. It is best to organise your accommodation before you get here.

Touch base with your host researcher

It's a good idea to get in touch with your host researcher a few weeks before you arrive in Auckland. It’s an opportunity for you to find out if there is anything you should bring or prepare, and it helps your host department prepare for your arrival.

Register with the University

Please register with the University and upload an ID photo for IT and Library access. After that, please inform the supervisor so they can request your IT and Library access.

Learn how to get around

It’s always a good idea to scope out public transport in advance, so you know what to expect.

You can find out about Auckland's transport options here: Transport in Auckland
