Costs and fees

Find out about all the costs and fees associated with spending a semester abroad, including tuition, insurance, visas, accommodation and cost of living.

Tuition fees

Exchange

Exchange students pay tuition fees to your home university.

Study Abroad

Study Abroad students pay a single flat fee, which covers tuition fees for up to 60 points (four courses) and includes the student services fee. Additional fees may be charged for over 60-point enrolments. The 2025 programme fee is NZ$13,200 per semester.

If you are applying through one of our study abroad partners, they may pay your fees on your behalf. Please check with them for all associated programme costs and fees.

Insurance and visa fees

Insurance

All international students are required to have appropriate health and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand. The University of Auckland has selected the Studentsafe University policy as its preferred policy. An insurance fee must be paid by both Study Abroad and Exchange students, unless you are granted an insurance waiver for an alternative policy. The 2024 insurance fee is NZ$405 per semester.

Visa

Visa application fees are set by Immigration New Zealand and vary based on nationality and visa type. Exchange students need an Exchange Student Visa, and Study Abroad students need a Fee Paying Student Visa. You can check how much your application will cost on the Immigration New Zealand website.

Accommodation and living costs

Accommodation

Accommodation in one of our self-catered University residences is guaranteed for all study abroad and exchange students. Utilities, Wifi, Freeview TV and a Sport and Recreation Centre membership are included in the fees. Cost varies depending on the residence, but ranges from approximately NZ$7,000 - $10,000 per semester.

For a breakdown of fees, see Accommodation options.

Living costs

These include your day-to-day expenses such as food, transport, mobile phone, entertainment, etc. You will also need to budget for study-related costs like textbooks, and any travel or holidays. Many study abroad and exchange students take the opportunity to explore other parts of the country during their time in New Zealand.
