Julia Zhu
Julia is focusing on learning as many skills as possible while studying Fine Arts at Elam.
“At Elam, you steer towards your own fields of interests and take responsibility for your own learning. We have people using digital programmes, some making contraptions with lights and electrical circuits, some building huge wooden structures. Things can get really technical, it’s not only painting as some people think. I am into making – sculpture, woodwork and ceramics – and also illustrating.
“I contribute sketches to Craccum, the University’s weekly student magazine. They put a call out for contributors and I draw for the lifestyle section as often as I can.
“I am focusing on learning as many skills as possible while I’m at Elam and know I’ll be able to apply them in some way. We were told by the Head of School that our jobs in the future aren’t created yet. I believe creative jobs are different from others. They’re like the alleyways rather than the main streets, you have to explore a bit to find them.”
