LLB Part II-IV and LLB(Hons) Degree Planning

This page outlines requirements and key information for students completing LLB PartsII–IV and the LLB(Hons). It includes course details, elective options, and special considerations such as the LAW 498.

LLB timeframe

There is no set timeframe to complete the LLB.

Important notes:

  • If you intend to practise law, the New Zealand Council of Legal Education (NZCLE) may consider older qualifications “stale” for admission purposes. See the Stale qualifications page.
  • Students returning after an absence should contact Student Hubs to ensure enrolment functions are active. Absences longer than two years may require a new application.

Progression and workload

  • You may enrol in up to 80 points per semester (typically 60 points per semester)
  • All LLB Part II courses must be completed before enrolling in any Part III course
  • You may begin taking Part III–IV electives once prerequisites are met
  • Conjoint students should plan early to ensure LLB progress aligns with their other degree.

LLB Part II

LLB Part II consists of four compulsory full-year courses and one single-semester course. Students must self-enrol for both A and B components (Semester One and Two) before the second Friday of Semester One.

Admission and enrolment conditions

  • You must have accepted your LLB Part II offer before enrolling
  • Students already active in LLB Part II-IV do not need to reapply
  • You must enrol in LAW 297 and at least one other LLB Part II course. Failure to do so may result in withdrawal

Study planning tips

  • Part-time study: Students may spread Part II courses across multiple years. Consider leaving LAW 201until later if planning to take LAWCOMM electives
  • Conjoint students: Often complete LLB Part II over two years (II and II.5)
  • Electives: Remaining Part II courses may be combined with electives once prerequisites are met

LLB Part III/IV

LLB Part III-IV consists of five compulsory courses plus law electives.

As part of the University’s shift to 15-point courses, the following 2026 courses will have updated points and new codes:

  • All Part II courses must be completed before enrolling in Part III
  • Requisite waivers are not permitted
  • LAW 458 is required for NZCLE admission for those intending to practise law
  • LAW 410 applies to students admitted to LLB Part II from 2026 onwards
  • Students may enrol in 400-level electives once prerequisites are met

Law electives

From Parts II.5 onwards, students may choose 400 level law electives to focus areas such as commercial, environmental, or public law.
 
Important notes
  • Availability: Electives vary annually and places may be limited
  • LAW 458: Required for students intending to be admitted to the Bar
  • Postgraduate courses: Eligible students (meeting GPA and prerequisites) may enrol in up to 30 points of approved postgraduate courses, counting towards /'/electives

Students self-enrol for LAW 498 during their final term of LLB Part IV.

Requirements can be completed before enrolment and include:

  • Moot participation
  • 3,750 word of sustained legal writing

LAWGENRL 400 and LAWGENRL 416 - Directed Study

Directed Study allows students to meet exact point totals in response to the university-wide standardisation to 15-point courses.

LLB Requirements

Programme requirements may differ depending on your year of admission or previous enrolments.

Key Points

    • Students changing programme in 2025 or later must complete the Waipapa Taumata Rau (WTR) course (unless exempt)
      • LAW 410 is required for students admitted to LLB Part II from 2026 onwards
        • LAW 458 is required for NZCLE admission
          • LLB(Hons) students must complete one 20-point seminar and one 40-point dissertation

              LLB(Hons)

              Students admitted to LLB(Hons) must complete the standard LLB requirements plus:

              Graduation and Admission

              After completing the LLB, students intending to practise law must:

              • Complete a Professional Legal Studies Course (PLSC)
              • Apply to the NZCLE for admission

              Students who have not yet graduated but have satisfied all LLB degree requirements may undertake the PLSC. This includes those still completing the Honours component.
