Māori Academic Programme (MAP)

Nau mai haere mai ngā tauira Māori mā. Welcome to the Māori Academic Programme.

MAP is the Law School’s equivalent to the Tuākana programme found in other faculties. We are a dedicated community that supports Māori students, ensuring you have the tools to excel in your studies and navigate the legal landscape with confidence.

Our mission is to enhance your understanding, foster academic success, and provide a grounded space for Māori excellence within the Law School.

What can you expect from our programme?

MAP provides fortnightly tutorial sessions for all Māori students enrolled in the following core courses:

  • Part I: LAW 121G, LAW 131 & LAW 141
  • Part II: LAW 201, LAW 211, LAW 231 & LAW 241
  • Part III & IV: LAW 304, LAW 305, LAW 316 & LAW 458

We also provide wānanga for all assignments, moots, tests and exams for the aforementioned courses. These workshops follow on from the regular MAP tutorials and intensives.

In addition, MAP provides hardship support, cultural support and professional development opportunities throughout the year. We also host two annual Māori Moot competitions, which give students the chance to develop advocacy skills and engage with te ao Māori perspectives in law.

Key information

All tauira Māori enrolled in a core Law course will be added to the MAP Canvas pages. If you have not been added by the enrolment deadline for each semester, please contact the MAP team or the Pouāwhina Māori.

While MAP is not compulsory, we strongly encourage attendance as it is designed to support your academic success and connection within the Law School.

Students admitted to Part II Law via the UTAS Māori pathway are required to participate in the Māori Academic Programme.

All MAP information is posted on Canvas, including tutorials, events, and access to pastoral support.
