Assignment submission process

All assignments submitted must be anonymised i.e. with NO STUDENT NAMES.

Full instructions on the assignment submission process for each course are shown on each assignment submission page in Canvas. Students should familiarise themselves with the assignment submission process for each course as penalties apply for incomplete/incorrect submission.

Written work for most courses must be submitted both in digital copy (Microsoft Word) by 12 noon on the due date or late penalties will apply.

In some courses, assignments are submitted in hard copy and digital format.

Assignment submission for courses which require online-only submission

The assignment must be uploaded via the Canvas assignment page. No hard copy submission is required. The assignment must be submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) format. Full instructions are available on the relevant course Canvas page.

Late submission of work/penalties for courses which require online-only submission

The penalty for lateness is 5 marks for each day (or part of day thereof) in which the digital copy of the assessment is submitted late. For the avoidance of doubt, penalties are applied on a calendar day basis (not a 24 hour basis). For the purposes on online-only submission, Saturday and Sundays count as calendar days.

Example 1:
An assignment is due on Thursday 7 March at 12 noon:

Student A hands in their copy at 2pm on Thursday 7 March. The lateness penalty applied will be a total of 5 marks deducted from the total available marks for the assignment:

i. Thursday, 7th of March – 5-mark late penalty.

Student B hands in their copy at 5am on Friday 8 March. The lateness penalty applied will be a total of 10 marks deducted from the total available marks for the assignment:

i. Thursday, 7th of March – 5-mark late penalty.

ii. Friday 8th March – 5-mark late penalty.

Example 2:

Due Date Due Date Day 1 (overdue) Day 2 (overdue) Day 3 (overdue) Day 4 (overdue) Day 5 (overdue) Day 6 (overdue) Day 7 (overdue)
Midday 12pm noon Midday-midnight Plus 1 day Plus 2 days Plus 3 days Plus 4 days Plus 5 days Plus 6 days Plus 7 days
No penalty 5 mark deduction 10 mark deduction 15 mark deduction 20 mark deduction 25 mark deduction 30 mark deduction 35 mark deduction 40 mark deduction

You can only challenge a lateness penalty for late online submission if you can prove a technical malfunction. In order to do so a copy of the receipt of submission will be required.

You are recommended to download and save a copy of the digital receipt for your own records and to ensure online submission has been successful. Students experiencing problems with online submissions should contact their lecturer prior to the submission due date and time.

Take-home tests

Lateness penalties for take-home tests vary depending on the length of the take-home test. You will be advised about applicable penalties and the format of submission of take-home tests in the course outlines and/or via Canvas.

Extensions for assignments

To apply for an extension, you must (i) email lawextensions@auckland.ac.nz (ii) supply evidence (e.g. doctor’s certificate) before the due date. Lecturers and tutors do not and cannot grant extensions.
