Professor Jaime King's Inaugural Address 2022

What We Owe Each Other: The Law and Sustainable Health Systems.

Our health is one of our most precious, and vulnerable, resources. When our health is threatened, so are our families, our livelihoods, our economies, and our societies. The question of what we owe each other has helped define and revise the laws governing health from the intimate confines of the physician-patient relationship to the balance of individual and state interests in medical decisions to the extent of a nation’s obligations to provide affordable and equitable access to health care.

Now, in a world of pandemics and climate change the question of “what we owe each other” has reached new heights of ethical, legal, political and medical importance. Professor King will explore the contours of this question in her scholarship and how the law can be a pivotal force in developing sustainable health systems for the future.

About Professor Jaime King

Jaime S. King is the John and Marylyn Mayo Chair in Health Law and Professor of Law at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Dr. King’s research explores the ways that the law affects people’s health and access to affordable and equitable health care.

Prior to joining the University of Auckland, Professor King was a Professor of Law at the University of California Hastings College of the Law and the Associate Dean of the UCSF/UC Hastings Consortium on Law, Science and Health Policy where she co-founded a transdisciplinary Masters Program in Health Policy and Law and The Source on Healthcare Price and Competition, a web-based resource that hosts curated interdisciplinary material and provides evidence-based policy solutions to promote affordable access to health care.

Professor King has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives and several state legislatures on issues related to healthcare price and competition. In New Zealand, her research also examines the intersection between human and environmental health and how nations can develop policies to promote sustainable health systems that are prepared to handle the climate-related challenges on the horizon.
