Climate in the Courtroom

2026 New Zealand Climate Litigation Conference

As contested issues of climate change law and policy increasingly play out in courts in New Zealand and around the world, lawyers, judges, academics, and activists are grappling with a range of procedural, doctrinal, constitutional, and strategic issues. How are developments and outcomes in overseas jurisdictions, and in international courts and tribunals, shaping New Zealand climate change law? What scope is there for common law remedies, such as public nuisance, to respond to contemporary environmental challenges? How are innovations in climate science, including attribution science, being reflected in judicial proceedings?

These issues, and more, will be debated at Climate in the Courtroom: NZ Climate Litigation Conference 2026 on 27 March 2026, at the University of Auckland’s Fale Pasifika.

This event will be a must-attend for professionals advising clients on climate change-related liability, academics working in this and adjacent fields, civil society representatives, members of the judiciary, iwi, students, and others interested in this emerging and rapidly evolving area of law.
