General information
The Auckland and Melbourne Law Schools are delighted to announce the introduction in 2026 of their Dual Masters (LLM) Programme.
This is a unique pathway that enables you to earn two LLM degrees in just one and a half years.
Through the combined and diverse Programmes of both institutions, you will have access to a broad range of courses to deepen your understanding of Trans-Tasman legal systems and to expand your professional networks.
This is a selective Programme, limited to 5 students from each institution per academic year.
Overview
The Auckland Law School – Melbourne Law School Dual Masters Programme allows you to study at both institutions and be awarded two Master of Laws degrees, one from the University of Melbourne and one from the University of Auckland.
You must complete 75 (of the usual 100) credit points at Melbourne Law School and 90 (of the usual 120) credit points at Auckland Law School. When the Programme is undertaken full-time, with transfer credits of points totalling 25 percent into each degree, you will graduate with two LLM degrees, one from each institution, after just three semesters or one and a half years, instead of four semesters or two years.
The Programme draws on the shared legal and cultural traditions of Australia and New Zealand and combines the academic strengths of both Law Schools. Each institution offers a broad range of courses, taught by domestic and international experts, some of which are delivered in an intensive (three- or five-day) format, providing you with exposure to diverse perspectives and approaches to legal study.
Course requirements
Successful applicants may commence their studies at either or both institutions. For exact dates, consult the University of Melbourne academic calendar and the University of Auckland academic calendar.
Insurance
Participating students may be eligible for free University of Melbourne travel insurance.
Awarding credit upon completion
Upon completion of the Programme, you must ensure your Auckland Law School transcript is sent to the Global Engagement Coordinator, so credit from the Programme can be applied as Advanced Standing to your Melbourne Law School Programme.
The result(s) gained at Auckland Law School will not be recorded on your University of Melbourne transcript and will not affect the student's Weighted Average Mark (WAM). You are advised to retain a copy of your overseas transcripts to demonstrate the obtained result(s).
Graduation and final rankings
You should not make any plans to attend a graduation ceremony until you have received a formal invitation to graduate.
Admission to practice
Completion of the programme does not automatically guarantee admission into legal practice for either the Australian or New Zealand jurisdictions. You must make your own enquiries in this regard.
