Learn about the postgraduate courses taught at the Auckland Law School, read our withdrawal and deletion policy and find out how our courses are structured.

Intensive Courses

  • Courses are held throughout both semesters.
  • They’re taught predominantly by visiting guest lecturers from New Zealand and overseas.
  • They’re held over five days, usually Wednesday-Friday and the following Monday and Tuesday to allow a break over the weekend.
  • Course materials must be purchased from the University Book Shop (UBS). Students are notified by email when the materials become available.
  • Assessments are due up to 12 weeks following the last day of the course. The due dates are listed on the full course outlines. Students taking intensive courses should check both the dates of the course and the assessment dates to ensure that they fit into their workload.

Full Semester courses

  • These are held weekly over the course of a 12-week semester.
  • They are taught by the Faculty of Law and the Department of Commercial Law.

Research

  • Students wanting a research or self-study component of their degree can consider a dissertation, major thesis or minor thesis.
  • Permission must be given prior to enrolment.
  • Students should discuss their intentions with the Student Centre and Development Manager well before the start of semester to ensure their application can be processed for the start of semester.

Specialisation for LLM

  • Students may elect to have their LLM degree awarded in either Corporate and Commercial Law, Environmental Law, Litigation and Dispute Resolution, Human Rights Law, International Law, or Public Law if they complete a minimum of 90 points out of the 120 points for the degree in one of those areas.
  • A specialisation will appear on their certificate as "Master of Laws".
