Law 498 requirements

LAW 498 Advanced Legal Research, Writing and Communication (0 points) is a compulsory requirement which every student of the LLB and LLB(Hons) programmes must complete.

  • You enrol in LAW 498 in the final semester of your programme (you can meet the requirements prior to enrolment).
  • LLB(Hons) students should complete LAW 498 before enrolling for the dissertation.
  • You will need to complete the course requirements within two semesters after enrolment or you will receive a Did Not Complete (DNC) for the course on your academic transcript. Summer School does not count as a Semester in this calculation.

Grading in LAW 498

No letter grades are awarded: LAW 498 is graded with either Completed (CPL) or Did Not Complete (DNC).

You must:

1.     Pass a moot having successfully completed all core courses at Parts I and II. This moot can be any optional Faculty-led moot which is separate from and does not form part of a course assessment.  

Examples of moots which comply include the General, Family, Employment, Māori Issues and Pacific Issues moots.  

To participate in the General Moot, you must have previously successfully completed all Part II courses. To participate in the Family or Employment Law Moots, you must have either have successfully completed, or be completing, Family/Employment Law.  

Some, but not all, international competition moots and moots organised by the Mooting Society may also qualify.* 

*For a competition moot to qualify for LAW 498 it must be judged, or the judging/marking be moderated, by a member of the (Law Faculty) Academic Staff. Moots organised and/or judged by students, or by practitioners without direct academic oversight will not qualify.

AND ALSO

2.     Complete and pass a single piece of sustained legal writing of at least 4000 words on an elective course. This can be satisfied in various ways, including:
                a.      LAW 456 Supervised Research
                b.     PILO of at least 4000 words
                c.      LAWGENRL 405 or LAWGENRL 447 report
                d.     Research Essay for a 15 or 30-point LLM course taken as part of your LLB programme
                e.     Honours Seminar Paper
                f.      Honours Dissertation
                g.      Any other single piece of writing of at least 4000 words. Please refer to the schedule below to identify course assessments which comply with LAW 498 requirements.
