“The University of Auckland was always my number one choice. It is in my home city, has excellent facilities and a fantastic support network. Its conjoint programme matched my various interests too. It is near the city centre, so there is great access to parks, galleries, restaurants and cafes.

“The Faculty of Arts appealed to me because of the diverse range of courses, particularly for Classical Studies and Ancient History. It allowed me to focus on my passion, ancient Egyptian history, and also delve into other interesting areas. I have also taken a few Anthropology papers and enjoyed these immensely through their discussion of archaeology, society, and evolution.

“I was also very interested in the Arts Scholars Programme, which brought me into a community of kind, intelligent individuals, with diverse backgrounds.
“I’ve been passionate about ancient history since I first travelled overseas, so Classical Studies and Ancient History was a logical choice. Not only has it fulfilled this passion, but it has also put me in contact with like-minded people with similar interests.

“The Faculty of Arts is outstanding for all students because it offers many options. The lecturers are excellent and very helpful if you have any questions; they are more than happy to review anything you’re unsure about, whether that’s course-related or career advice.

“The student lifestyle is great at the University. There are numerous events and many spaces where you can study, have lunch, or socialise. There is a great food court with a wide selection of different cuisines. The nightlife is also great. If you need help finding your feet, I recommend using the support services because they are always incredibly useful.

“My love for ancient history and archaeology led me to join the HERA club (an ancient history club) and the Auckland Archaeological Society. Both have several fun events throughout the year. I’m also part of the debating society, the AUCSA, and UACC. These are perfect for building leadership potential and public speaking capabilities.

“I would advise new students to get into extra-curricular life at the university as soon as possible. I’m doing plenty now, but in my first year, I was overwhelmed by how much there was to choose from. I would encourage anyone to get involved in clubs or societies that match their interests – don’t hesitate because it’s fun and you meet many great people!

“I am thinking of becoming a consultant, analyst or going into public policy. I would also be interested in pursuing a career in Egyptology or specialising in the history of another ancient civilisation.”
