Celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) with our Faculty waiata “Te Kura Tangata”.
Tēnā koutou katoa. Nau mai, hara mai koutou ki Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. Welcome to Māori Language Week!
We have developed a Faculty waiata “Te Kura Tangata”. The waiata – written by two of our gifted students - is a collective and joyful expression of our values.
And the words:
Ko te manu e kai ana i te mātauranga
Anei ngā iti rearea o te kura tangata
Ko te kura tangata tēnei e whakamana ana
I te tapu o te tangata mā tātou katoa
Ko te kura tangata tēnei e whakamana ana
I te tika, te pono kia hohou te rongo
The bird that partakes of the knowledge
This is the challenge of the Faculty of Arts
the Faculty of Arts will enable the mana
and the tapu of all people
the Faculty of Arts will enable the mana
through truth and right, to enable reconciliation
Some key metaphors/whakatauki/proverbs from the waiata:
Ko te manu e kai ana i te miro, nōna te ngahere.
The Bird (the one) who partakes of the miro berry (the fruits of the forest) that will be their domain.
Engari, ko te manu e kai ana i te mātauranga, nōna te ao.
The Bird (the one) who partakes of knowledge, theirs will be the world.

Even the small rearea (bellbird) can ascend to the great heights of the Kahikatea tree
