Plan your majors

If you are nearing the end of your first year of study, this is the right time to decide what major(s) you would like to pursue.

Who is this for?

Planning majors in the Faculty of Arts and Education applies to students currently in their first year of the following programmes:

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA)
  • Bachelor of Arts conjoint
  • Bachelor of Communication (BC)
  • Bachelor of Communication conjoint
  • Bachelor of Global Studies (BGS)
  • Bachelor of Global Studies conjoint

Why now?

Enrolments for 2026 begin on 3 November 2025, making this the ideal time for first-year students to decide on their majors. If you plan to continue with the major(s) you initially selected, now is the time to finalise them. If you are considering a change, you can update your major(s) by yourself in SSO or consult one of our friendly Hub Advisers.

Why is degree planning important?

Finalising your major(s) now ensures you can choose the right courses in 2026 and beyond, helping you stay on track to graduate on time with a degree that aligns with your interests and goals. If you are unsure about which major(s) to include, this is a great opportunity to explore your options with our Hub Advisers. If you would like more details about a particular major, our UG Advisers are available to guide you.

Frequently asked questions

How many majors can I take in my degree?

Most students take one or two majors, but the exact number depends on your programme:

  • If you are studying a Bachelor of Arts (BA), you will need to complete a double major.
  • In a Bachelor of Arts Conjoint, you can choose to complete either one major or a double major for the BA part of your degree.
  • A Bachelor of Communication (BC) or BC Conjoint requires one major.
  • A Bachelor of Global Studies (BGS) or BGS Conjoint also requires one major.

What if I don't finalise my major now?

You are not required to decide right away, but we strongly recommend finalising your major(s) as early as possible to stay on track.

Why is it important?

Simpler planning: Waiting to decide can make it harder to choose the right courses and may slow your progress.

Better enrolment opportunities:
Some courses are in high demand and may have limited capacity, so confirming your major early helps secure a place in the courses you need.

Save time and costs: Delaying your decision may mean taking extra courses later, which could extend your study.

I have finalised my major. Can I change it later?

Yes, you can change your major during your degree if your interests or goals shift. Keep in mind that changing later may affect your course planning, so it's a good idea to talk to a  Student Hub or UG adviser before making any changes later through 'My Study Options' on Student Services Online.

When is the latest I need to decide on a major?

You can finalise or change your major at any time before completing your degree. However, we recommend doing this by the end of your first year. This ensures you can plan your courses properly for second year and beyond and avoid missing out on any required courses that may only run once a year.

If I am still undecided, what should I do?

We recommend talking to our UG Advisers, who can give you information tailored to your situation and help you explore a particular major in more detail.
