Concept

Non-communicable chronic conditions (such as diabetes, cancer, coronary heart disease) are the major contributor to premature death and disability globally and in Aotearoa New Zealand, and to inequalities in premature mortality. The impacts of NCDs are exacerbated in individuals experiencing multiple comorbid health conditions.

Disability (i.e. that limits an activity) is intricately associated with chronic conditions. However, associations with disability have not been systematically investigated across a broad range of chronic conditions. Linked up health, census, and tax data in Statistics New Zealand’s Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) provide opportunity to examine the associations between chronic conditions and disability at a large national scale, with subgroup stratification to examine for inequalities. Consideration of chronic disease effects by ethnicity and deprivation may help us to understand the impact of resources on a person’s ability to continue to function with a particular condition.

The aim of this study is to understand how chronic conditions are associated with functional impairment in Aotearoa New Zealand; and how functional impairment differs by health condition, comorbidity, age, sex, ethnicity, and deprivation. The common patterns of overlap between chronic conditions are examined to understand the implications of comorbidities on disability. Ten chronic conditions will be investigated:

  • Coronary Heart Disease
  • Gout
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Stroke
  • Acute Myocardial Infarction
  • Dementia
  • Mental Health Disorder.
