When does the programme commence?

What are the entry requirements?

  • An undergraduate degree with proficiency in te reo Māori. Prior to entry, all candidates must demonstrate te reo Māori competency by providing one of the following types of evidence:
    * Achieved Whakamātauria Tō Reo Māori Level 3 (National Māori Language Proficiency Examinations);
    * Undertaken all primary schooling and at least three years of secondary schooling in te reo Māori; or
    * Undertaken five years of secondary schooling in te reo Māori
  • Numeracy and Literacy requirements as defined by the Teaching Council of Aotearoa NZ (you will be required to sit literacy and numeracy tests).
  • Applicants with experience in a Limited Authority to Teach (LAT) role, but who do not have an undergraduate degree may still apply, with acceptance into the programme decided on a case-to-case basis.
  • Entrance is subject to satisfactory police check/s, safety checks, interview and referees’ reports.

How long will it take to complete this qualification?
The duration of this programme is one year full-time, usually commencing in January and ending in November each year.

Are there any scholarships available?
Those accepted into the programme are eligible to apply for the Teacher Education in Schools Programme (TESP), part of the Ministry of Education’s School Onsite Training programme scholarship. Principals from partner Kaupapa Māori Education and Māori-medium Education settings will interview candidates and those accepted will receive the accompanying scholarship. What is Noho-ā-Kura (Practicum)?
Professional experience known as noho-ā-kura (practicum) is a major component of the programme. ITE ākonga will complete two noho-ā-kura over the year within kaupapa Māori education (KME) or Māori-medium education (MME) settings, one of which will be at the host school, with a second placement at another participating school or in a different class within the host school.

Are Wānanga sessions required?
Wānanga sessions will be offered twice per semester providing opportunities for immersive learning, reflection, and collaboration and are optional.

Do I need to complete a New Zealand police check?
All applicants to the Graduate Diploma in Teaching programme are required to complete a New Zealand police vetting check. This is mandated by both the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand and the University of Auckland. For more information, please see: Vulnerable Children’s Act VCA.

Do I need to undertake the literacy and numeracy tests?
Yes, this is a core requirement of the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand and applies to all applicants. More information can be found on our Information for teaching applicants page.

Whose references can I provide for my programme application?
You are welcome to ask anyone who is not a close friend or relative to complete a referee report for you. This may include the following:
• Teacher/lecturer/professor/tutor
• Religious leader/pastor/community leader
• Employer/manager
• Coach
Two referee reports are required for your application. Please note these must be directly emailed to us by your referees and not by the applicant.
