Congratulations to our Blues Award winners

Four Faculty of Education and Social Work students were acknowledged for their outstanding achievements outside the classroom on Friday.

2019 Sportswoman of the Year Isla Norman-Bell

Congratulations to Isla Norman-Bell, Lexie Qiao, Bruce Ng and Jamie Hume, who all won 2019 Blues Awards last week. A Blues Award is the highest accolade to be won at a tertiary level for excellence in a sporting code, arts and culture, or service and leadership.

Isla Norman-Bell (Sportswoman of the Year): Touch Football and Rugby Sevens

Isla won a silver medal at the Touch World Cup in Malaysia earlier this year for the open women’s grade. The World Cup takes place only once every four years. A sporting all-rounder, Isla has also competed with the New Zealand Warriors NRL Touch Premiership open women’s team and the New Zealand Black Ferns 7s development team.

Bruce Ng: Ultimate Frisbee

Bruce took out second place at the Ultimate Frisbee National Open Club Championship, with the Auckland Groot team. He also finished tenth at the World Under 24 Ultimate Championship, where he was a member of the New Zealand Under 24 Open Team (Kea). Bruce was selected to be a member of the New Zealand training squad for the 2020 World Ultimate Open Championship.

Jamie Hume: Netball

A talented shooter, Jamie Hume was a franchise player for the Northern Mystics netball team in 2018 and 2019. She’s been selected for the Northern Stars team for the 2020 season. Jamie was also part of the winning Ferns team at the 2016 Fast5 Netball World Series.

Lexie Qiao: Service and Leadership

Lexie is the founder and director of Luckia Student Help, a not-for-profit programme that aims to help international students with mental wellbeing. She has hosted four seminars about mental health in the local community, universities in New Zealand and high schools in China, involving more than 100 students. In 2019, Lexie became Vice President of the Education and Social Work Student Association (ESSA).
