Applying for Law Transfer
Students currently studying law at another New Zealand university may be eligible to transfer into the University of Auckland’s LLB programme. This page outlines eligibility, application requirements, and next steps.
Important: Meeting the minimum requirements listed on this page makes you eligible for consideration by the Law Selection Committee but does not guarantee admission.

Overview and key dates
Transfers for LLB Part II-III are available for Semester One entry only.
- 1 October - Recommended application deadline
- 1 December - Final application deadline (no late applications accepted)
- 8 December - Deadline to submit transcripts for assessment
- Mid-December - LLB Part II–III decisions finalised by the Law Selection Committee
If your final grades are released after 1 December, email them to undergradlaw@auckland.ac.nz as soon as they are available.
Transfer eligibility and requirements
All required non-law courses must be university courses at bachelor's level or above.
Important: If a course is graded as 'Pass' or 'Fail', you must complete an additional law course to meet the points.

LLB Part I transfers
If you have incomplete LLB Part I studies, you may apply for Semester One or Two. Contact Students Hubs or email undergradlaw@auckland.ac.nz for advice.
To be considered for LLB Part II, applicants who have completed Part I at another New Zealand university must have:
- Passed LAW 121G Law & Society (or equivalent)
- Passed LAW 131 Legal Method (or equivalent) with at least a C+
- Passed all required non-law courses for LLB Part I at their home Law School
- Achieved a minimum LawGPE of 3.00
In your first year of transfer, you must complete:
- LAW 141 Legal Foundations (Semester Two)
- Any outstanding non-law points
- One Waipapa Taumata Rau (WTR) course (unless exempt)
Additional information for LLB Part I transfers
Students whose most recent studies are at the University of Auckland and are applying for LLB Part II (without any Part II courses) are considered under general admission and must have completed:
- LAW 141 Legal Foundations (min C+)
- At least 60pts non-law courses
- One WTR courses (unless exempt)

LLB Part I transfers may be eligible for the University Targeted Admission Schemes (UTAS). Applications are assessed alongside your transfer application.

Where two courses are listed for equivalence, both must be passed separately with a minimum grade of C+.

LLB Part II-III transfers
Applicants who have completed some or all Part II courses (e.g., Criminal Law, Public Law, Law of Torts, Law of Contract) at another New Zealand Law School may apply for transfer.
Minimum requirements for consideration:
- Passed LAW 121G (or equivalent)
- Passed LAW 131 (or equivalent) with at least a C+
- Passed LAW 141 with at least a C+ (if completed)
- Completed ≥75pts of non-law courses
- Minimum LawGPE of 5.00
Applicants with incomplete LLB Part II studies, must meet the standard for general entry to Part II.
Notes:
- Not all courses are transferable; programme structures vary by university
- To have courses assessed, apply via the Apply to Study portal, upload your transcript and current enrolments, then email undergradlaw@auckland.ac.nz
- UTAS does not apply to LLB Part II-III transfers
- Discretionary hardship may be applied for where there are extenuating circumstances
In your first year of transfer, you must complete any outstanding:
- LAW 141 Legal Foundations (Semester Two)
- LAW 297 Legal Research, Writing & Communication
- One WTR course (unless exempt)
LLB Part IV transfers
Applicants with fewer than 120pts remaining cannot transfer. Instead, you may take law electives under a Certificate of Proficiency (COP) for credit back to your home university with your Dean’s written approval.

LawGPE calculation
The LawGPE (Law Grade Point Equivalent) is a specially weighted calculation used for LLB Part II-III selection.

Application process and timeline
- Submit your application via the Apply to Study portal
- Apply by 1 October for full consideration
- Upload unofficial transcript and screenshot of current enrolments
- Submit your official transcript by 8 December
Assessments may be delayed until late January if most applicants have pending results.
LLB(Hons) after transfer
You may apply for Honours after completing:
- LAW 141 Legal Foundations,
- LAW 297 Legal Research, Writing & Communication,
- All LLB Part II courses, and
- Any outstanding non-law requirements.

Overseas law transfers
Direct transfers from overseas law programmes are not accepted. Overseas law courses cannot be credited.
Options if studying overseas:
- Complete your overseas law degree and apply to New Zealand Council of Legal Education (NZCLE) for assessment, or
- Complete the full LLB degree at the University of Auckland, starting from first year.

Appeals
Decisions by the Law Selection Committee are final but may be appealed based on new evidence or extenuating circumstances.
