Symone Tafuna’i’s internship with the America’s Cup production team took her behind the scenes, on the ocean and into the newsroom at TVNZ.

Key facts

Career: Assignments desk coordinator, TVNZ
Programme: Bachelor of Arts
Subjects: Communication

“When I was in high school I didn’t know what I wanted to do career wise, all I knew was that I enjoyed writing essays and reports. My mum made the suggestion of exploring journalism since English was one of my strengths.

“During my BA, I enjoyed expanding my knowledge within the journalistic realm especially subjects that were focused around sports media, politics and sociology.

“For my Communication internship, I was part of the America’s Cup campaigns and production team at TVNZ. I worked behind the scenes with Toyota and Kiwibank, wrote a report covering the history of Emirates Team New Zealand, and contributed to the America’s Cup presentation.

“It was interesting to see how the production team created each campaign with Emirates Team NZ. I was able to absorb a lot and learn the importance of what it takes to create a successful production shoot.

I was fortunate to be mentored by Melodie Robinson who has a great team behind her. They were extremely helpful in ensuring that I got as much experience as possible.

“The most important learning I took away was to manage my time and adapt to change. It was a fast-paced workplace and things could change rapidly. It is easy to get anxious or stressed however, if you organise your thoughts and plans you find that you can adapt to the environment around you.

“I also learned not to be afraid to add ideas while I was on a shoot and this really boosted my confidence as I was able to self-research and have conversations where I could contribute my ideas.

“As an athlete myself, I feel most comfortable within the sporting realm and have always aspired to become a sports reporter.

“I’m now working as an assignments desk coordinator at TVNZ where I monitor developing news stories, and maintain news flow throughout the newsroom. I’ve enjoyed meeting well-known reporters and presenters who I watched on television from a young age and they’ve given me great advice on becoming a sports reporter which I’m grateful for.”
