“As an Outdoor Instructor, my role involves facilitating a wide range of activities for diverse groups. No two days are the same, making my job both dynamic and rewarding while staying active and inspiring others to develop a love for the outdoors. I am surrounded by like-minded people who are passionate and supportive and the camaraderie in our team creates a positive environment for both staff and participants.
“One of the most valuable parts of my study was learning about ethics. Our ethics courses encouraged me to think critically, consider multiple viewpoints and approach challenges with an open mind. It is essential to be patient, supportive and adaptable when working with participants of all ages and abilities. These are skills I have found incredibly useful in the workplace, where every individual, situation and decision can require a different approach.
“My work requires strong communication, problem-solving and leadership skills, as well as the ability to maintain high energy levels throughout the day. I interact with a wide range of people, including children, parents, teachers, colleagues and community members. Being able to adapt my communication style to suit different audiences enables me to build positive relationships and create meaningful experiences.
“The most rewarding part of my job is helping people build confidence, step outside their comfort zones and create positive memories. Knowing that I have played a small role in someone's personal growth or outdoor experience makes every day feel worthwhile.
“I chose to study a Bachelor of Sport, Health and Physical Education because I have always had a strong passion for physical activity and living a healthy, active lifestyle. Equally important to me was the opportunity to share that passion with others and help people experience the benefits that it can bring. I discovered there are many different pathways and opportunities offered, which broadened my understanding of the industry and reinforced my decision to pursue the degree.
“The University's high-quality facilities were also a major factor, particularly the Hiwa Recreation Centre, which provides excellent spaces for learning, practical activities and student wellbeing.
The BSportHPE provides an excellent bridge into the professional world. It equips students with the knowledge, experiences, and practical and transferable skills to prepare them for a wide range of careers within the sport, health, education and recreation sectors.
“I really appreciated the opportunity to learn from experienced lecturers and tutors who bring real-world industry knowledge into the classroom. Their guidance, along with the connections and networks gained throughout the programme, helps students gain insight into potential career pathways and future opportunities.
“During my studies, I also volunteered with Disability Sport Auckland, supporting individuals to participate in sport and physical activity. This experience further strengthened my understanding of inclusion, adaptability and the positive impact that sport and recreation can have on people's lives.
“My career journey has been shaped by a combination of part-time work, coaching roles and extensive volunteer experience. I worked with Kiwi Kick Start, delivering after-school football programmes, and coached young children, aged 2–7, through Little Kickers. These experiences strengthened my ability to engage, motivate and support children while developing key leadership and communication skills.
“My biggest piece of advice would be to embrace every opportunity that comes your way and never be afraid to ask questions. University is a place to learn, grow and explore new ideas, and some of the best opportunities come from simply putting yourself out there. Whether it's seeking help, applying for an opportunity, making a connection, or trying something new, asking questions and being proactive can open doors you never expected. Make the most of your time at university, stay curious – and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.”
